Redeploying used but functional surplus distribution transformers is a significant part of our environmental principles.

Circular economy in transformers means using a transformer’s estimated 30–40 year life cycle — depending on utilisation, even longer — to the full before it is finally recycled as material.

We have worked this way for 15 years: we buy functional transformers, test them and sell them on. They go mainly to countries outside the EU, where they are refurbished if needed before being put into service.

There they serve out the rest of their life cycle, in many cases for another 20 years. Overall this is usually the least burdensome approach for the environment, because the energy needed to manufacture a new transformer causes significant emissions and a considerable carbon footprint.
